Healthy snacks are foods high in vitamins and minerals, and low in sugar. Sugar feeds bacteria present in plaque and causes it to release acid that attacks the enamel on your teeth. Acid attacks can occur up to 20 minutes after you finish eating before it is neutralized by saliva, therefore, frequent snacking increases the chance of getting cavities. Kids teeth are most susceptible to acid attacks, since the baby teeth's enamel is different from adult teeth's enamel.
Limit the effects of sugary snacks by:
- serving sugary snacks along with other teeth-friendly foods
- avoid hard and sticky foods, like gummy bears (they stay longer on your teeth)
- drink water after sugary snacks
- brush your teeth or chew sugar free gum after sugary snacks
Healthy snacks:
- raw carrots, celery sticks and hummus
- sliced apples and sugar-free peanut butter
- berries (frozen or fresh), spinach and plain yogurt blended into a smoothie
- frozen fruits
- string cheese
- milk
- nuts and seeds
